East Side Eagles have been busy in the Makerspace! Students in Grades 3-5 are working on a project-based learning activity to wrap up our unit on architects, skyscrapers, blueprints and models. We have been discussing the idea behind Shark Tank, including investors, capital, and return on an investment. Students have been working in groups as entrepreneurs to design model skyscrapers that would be famous tourist attractions. They will be presenting their famous skyscrapers to the investment “Shark,” Mrs. C. This project follows our initial STEM challenge of building skyscrapers out of straws and learning about famous buildings around the world. Students have also learned scientific terms such as compression and how the forces of gravity effect the building of tall skyscrapers, as well as important inventions that allowed architects to dream of taller buildings. Students in Grades K-2 have been learning about architects, blueprints and models. They have been tackling STEM building challenges after hearing the new book The Three Little Pigs: An Architectural Tale. These pictures show some examples of their houses designed with “scraps, glass, and stone and concrete.” They worked with a partner to build a house around their “pig” to keep him safe from the big, bad wolf! I hope everyone has a safe and happy fall break! We will be reinforcing scientific standards from every grade level as we enter the Makerspace “Zoo” in October. Please visit the Foundation webpage soon for more pictures and updates! Mrs. Cushing
